"Hello, this is Bill Cunningham..."
For years, those opening words transported me onto New York City’s sidewalks. That happy jazz tune sent me running over to watch Bill Cunningham’s “On the Street” fashion round up video from The New York Times. Every week he pieced together a unique painting of the streets. He saw the extraordinary in the ordinary, high fashion on the street, observing and appreciating the quotidian over haute couture. He told an everyday story, of real New Yorkers, of personal expression, and saw the marvel and excitement in every detail. He wasn’t a critic, and never saw anything wrong with even the most inventive, imaginative, or outlandish trends. Everything was exciting, everything was marvelous, everything was great. To Bill, everyone was special. To us, Bill was special.
